Perché negli Stati Uniti c’è un elevato livello di disuguaglianza. I ceti più ricchi fanno tutto il possibile per proteggersi e hanno paura dello Stato che può redistribuire reddito e ricchezza. Preferiscono attraversare una pandemia piuttosto che contemplare la possibilità di una società più equa.

All’inizio Trump ha persino negato che ci fosse un problema. Ora il Congresso, non Trump, ha fatto passare una buona legge. Ma è stata una dura lotta. I repubblicani volevano un fondo nero da 500 miliardi di dollari da gestire in totale segretezza, ma i democratici sono riusciti a imporre la vigilanza sui fondi stanziati perché non si deve dare a tutti, ma solo a chi ne ha bisogno. Prevediamo una disoccupazione al 20-30 per cento e tanti americani hanno sul conto non più di mille dollari. Se perdono lo stipendio di un mese che ne sarà di loro?

In Europa è stato sospeso il Patto di stabilità e crescita. E quando la pandemia passerà, lei pensa che l’Europa dovrà tornare a seguire le regole di bilancio di un tempo? Cioè il 3% nel rapporto deficit/pil e il tetto al 60% nel rapporto fra debito/pil?

Già allora quei numeri non avevano alcuna giustificazione economica. Dopo il Coronavirus, l’Europa dovrà occuparsi del cambiamento climatico e della costruzione di un nuovo sistema sanitario. E ciò richiederà investimenti ingenti. Bisognerà andare ben oltre il tradizionale deficit del 3%.

I movimenti sovranisti europei si avvantaggeranno da questa situazione secondo lei?

Se dopo il Coronavirus l’Europa cercherà di imporre le vecchie regole del deficit al 3% e del debito al 60% del pil, i movimenti nazionalisti non avranno più freni.

Avremo un mondo dove è urgente ripristinare l’equilibrio tra il popolo, il potere e il profitto. Se non lo capiremo questa crisi ne preparerà un’altra peggiore. Lei se la immagina… una peggiore di questa?

At first, Trump even denied there was a problem. Now Congress, not Trump, has passed a good law. But it was a tough fight. The Republicans wanted a $ 500 billion black fund to be managed in total secrecy, but the Democrats managed to impose supervision on the funds allocated because it should not be given to everyone, but only to those who need it.
